The women's cross-country at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place at the Laoshan Mountain Bike Course on August 23 at 10:00 (UTC+8).[1]
The event was a mass-start contest consisting of multiple laps around the course. Only a final was held, with the first cyclist to the finish line, after six laps of the course, being the winner. Cyclists who were lapped finished the lap they were on, then exited the course.[2]
Sabine Spitz (Germany) opened up a one-minute lead on the field at the end of the second lap and stayed out in front to the end to claim the gold medal. Of the 30 competitors who began the event only 18 completed the full distance.
